About Brian Loflin

Photographer, Author, Teacher, Consultant

Brian Loflin is a photographic professional with a career that spans more than four decades in the advertising, aviation, bio-medical and publishing industry. As a graduate biologist with a background in marketing and communications, his early experience was as a medical photographer and a freelance photojournalist.

During his career, Brian's photographs have been published in many international magazines, books and other publications, and through major news agencies of the world. His work has won numerous industry awards, but most importantly, the admiration and respect of his clients.

Brian and wife, Shirley actively conduct seminars and workshops in many areas of photography. They authored, produced and photographed Grasses of the Texas Hill Country and Texas Cacti two photographic field guides for Texas A&M University Press and available at most book sellers.

October Meeting

There is a reception for the premier art exhibition at the Hays County Government Center in San Marcos at the same time as our regular meeting next week. If you recall, there was a call for submissions a couple of months ago, and two of our current members were accepted,Michael Penn Smith and Art Arizpe.

We are cancelling our meeting and inviting everyone to come to the reception. Please see the attached flyer. The reception is free and open to the public. They'll have wine and hors d'oeuvres.

In addition to viewing the works, this will be a nice chance to support the local arts, show our county government how much interest there is, and meet other local artists.

If there is time and interest, we could go to the Walkers' Gallery, which is open until 10 pm on Thursdays, and have an artist's talk or more leisurely viewing time than we had a chance to at the Naturescapes Reception.

About our Program

Club member David Winchester presented a program on his macro and closeup photography last year and has continued to wow us with his work during our critique sessions.

This time, he'll present a demo / workshop. He'll show us his equipment, demonstrate it's use, and then take a macro photo during the meeting and show us how he processes it in Photoshop.

Dave has had photography as a hobby for around 40 years. He is strictly an amateur and does it because he enjoys it. He started out carrying an Instamatic in the service and bought an underwater camera (Nikonos) in Japan. He got introduced to close-ups through the underwater photography. He then bought a used Nikon F and 5 lenses from a pro getting out of the business. One of the lenses was a 105 micro and it quickly became his favorite.

He's always just shot pictures as he had time or a place. When he retired recently, he started shooting more. He found pixoto, tried it, and now shoots almost daily in his yard.

About our Program

Carol Serur and Carolyn Whiteside will share their combined knowledge of bird photography. They will discuss lens selection and camera settings, as well as talk about special equipment helpful for birding, and how to get those shots you see in the books.

They will share some of their favorite bird images and offer some tips for processing and printing. Although this is geared for birds, most of the information will apply to all nature photography.

Carol Serur joined the Hill Country Photography Club about 7 years ago, when she became a member in order to learn more about her new found love of photography.  Since then, her work has been shown in numerous juried shows exhibited at the following galleries: Watson Studio Gallery, A. Smith Gallery, PhotoPlace Gallery, Dark Room Gallery, Blue Lab Gallery, Bob Bullock Museum, Kiernan Gallery, Options Gallery at Odessa College, Islander Art Gallery, and San Marcos Walker's Gallery. She has images that have been published in Cowboys and Indians magazine and Southern Living magazine. Carol currently serves as a board member and secretary of the Texas Photographic Society which has close to 600 current members.

Carolyn Whiteside will talk about Travel/Vacation Photography. She will cover several topics including equipment, apps, preparation, helpful hints, etc. which she will illustrate with some of her travel photography. This will be an informal presentation and she encourages members to participate and add suggestions for things they have found useful.

Carolyn studied education at Oklahoma State University, and taught at the high school level for 20 years before retiring. She and her husband, Bobby, both enjoy camping and traveling. She renewed her interest in photography as a way to entertain herself in retirement. After seeing her wildlife and nature images, local wildlife artist Wade Butler encouraged her to show and sell her work.

She is now a regular exhibitor at Gruene Market Days, Oysterfest in Fulton, The Official Texas Arts and Crafts Fair in Kerrville, and The Annual 4th of July Rockport Art Festival. She has won numerous awards, and has images published in Texas Parks and Wildlife and Hill Country Magazine. She also has images in an Embassy Suites in San Antonio, and the Gruene River Restaurant in Gruene.

About our Program

We're going to try something a little different this month. Our program is a little bit of show and tell mixed with knowledge and tip sharing. This month's program needs your active participation so please give it a try.

Have you got a favorite photography web site? How about an indispensable piece of equipment? A printer or framing shop to recommend? A book or magazine that has helped you become a better photographer?

Please bring any books, magazines, or equipment and tell us about it. If you have a web site to recommend, please email it to me, hcphotoclub@gmail.com, and we can visit it during the meeting.

Our members have a wide background and different levels of experience and I'm sure we can all pick up a useful tip or learn something new!

About our Program

Long-time club member and Treasurer, Winifred Simon, will give us a update on Cell Phoneography.

It's been two years since Winifred last showed us the kind of images you can achieve with your cell phone and apps, so we thought an update was due.

We'd like you to participate in the program too and include cell phone photos you wish to share. Please send up to two cell phone images and be prepared to discuss them during the meeting. What cell phone and app did you use?

About our Program

Long-time club member, Larry Alford, will show us the Nik Software Tools.

Larry is a self-taught photographer who has been photographing nature and landscapes for over 40 years. Larry lives the in the beautiful hill country of Texas between Austin and San Antonio with his wife Rebecca. They love traveling the back roads of central Texas photographing the magnificent Hill Country scenes. Larry's creative eye has lead to his photographs being selected for calendars, greeting cards and he has won numerous local, state and international awards. In 2003, Larry began developing his skill as a digital artist, and has worked to increase the dynamic range of his photographed subjects, but retaining his ability to capture the spirit of the subject which is prevalent in his photographs.

About our Program

We were fortunate to have Andy Heatwole conduct a hands-on Night Photography workshop in downtown San Marcos for our March meeting. He is returning for our October program to demonstrate his workflow and techniques for post-processing of Night Photography images.

Andy has offered to work on our images, taken at the March workshop, during the program! Here are his guidelines:

For the images, I prefer to work with the original RAW files but I will consider JPG/TIFF images and those that have already been edited. For each image submitted, I would like a description of what the photographer wants to see in terms of enhancement or correction. Depending on how many are submitted and the time limit for the presentation, I may have to select only a few to demonstrate.

Andy Heatwole is a professional architectural photographer and works with clients throughout the US. He was inspired to take up photography over a decade ago when he discovered the possibilities of night photography on the Internet. What started as a hobby became a passionate pursuit and eventually a career. When he's not shooting commercially, he enjoys photographing the landscapes and natural beauty of the Central TX area. His night photography workshops blend his love for night photography with his enjoyment of teaching it. These workshops serve as an introduction into an area of photography that offers virtually unlimited opportunities for creativity. By demystifying the process, participants gain an understanding of the photographic techniques required for capturing great photos at night. His goal is for each participant to come away some great photos and the skills to continue exploring night photography on their own. All skill levels are welcomed and participants receive personal instruction to meet their specific needs.

About our Program

We're glad to have Carol's program back! If you remember, earlier this year, she was bumped for us to do the Night Photography field trip with Andy Heatwole.

Are you the family or club photographer for special events? Do you like to document your vacations? How do you share the images with others after taking all of these photos?

Carol Serur will demonstrate a quick and EASY method to share your photos in a way people will want to see them again and again, and even share them with others who they just know would want to see them.

How easy? Come to the March 21st meeting and see how simple it is to prepare a fun and interesting slideshow of your recent special moments.

Carol has been a member of Hill Country Photography Club for about 6 years, after searching for a club that might help her learn more about photography. She has found the photo club programs, and the sharing of information among the members, to have been invaluable in helping her learn photography in the retirement stage of her life. She also served as club co-Vice President for 2011-2012.

Carol has shown her work at Watson Studio Gallery, A. Smith Gallery, PhotoPlace Gallery, Dark Room Gallery, Blue Lab Gallery, the Bob Bullock Museum, and Starbucks, and currently serves as a board member of the Texas Photographic Society.

June Meeting

7:00 - 9:00: Field Trip - "Tour of the Wittliff Collections" - Carla Ellard

Carla Ellard, the Southwestern & Mexican Photography Collection Photography Gallery Curator at the Wittliff Collections, has graciously agreed to give us a guided, after-hours tour.

We will skip the regular portions of our meeting, including the critique session.

Meeting Location: The seventh floor of the Albert B. Alkek Library on the campus of Texas State University-San Marcos. Here are directions to the gallery, and the 3 parking lots...however, only the first one, LBJSC (LBJ Student Center) parking lot  will be available for us to park that night. If you're on IH-35, you will take exit 206 and head west. I strongly suggest you carpool because there is a charge and parking is always tricky on campus.

Some of us are going to meet at our regular location at Horizon Bay in San Marcos and then carpool. We should plan on leaving Horizon Bay at 6:45. Map and directions available on our club website.

Kenny Braun is a Texas photographer that’s equal parts Thoreau and Avedon—an existential outdoorsman and consummate professional who adeptly captures everything from remote places to far away gazes. His curiosity about faces and places is evident in his work, which is so vivid you can’t even imagine a photographer being involved. He’s built a career and reputation as a no nonsense and exceedingly easy to work with pro. Braun is somewhat of an Indiana Jones of photography, shooting in the studio or meeting with art directors one day, then braving the elements on a picturesque escapade the next. He is best known for his environmental portraiture, landscape and editorial photography. He brings a consistent visual identity to a wide range of subject matter by focusing on quality of light, color and mood. His approach is straight-forward and unpretentious with an M.O. that relies on natural light, decisive moments, serendipity and technical precision. He has traveled extensively and has a substantial catalog of images from his native Texas. Being a long-time contributing photographer for Texas Monthly Magazine has provided a steady stream of subject matter from every corner of the state. Music, surfing and photography have been his passions since high-school, each influencing the other. His personal work explores a sense of place and memory by returning to scenes from his childhood. His series on Texas Surfers and the Gulf Coast will be published by the University of Texas Press in 2014.

About our Program

John is Curator of Entomology at the University of Texas at Austin and Kendra is a Professor at St. Edwards University in Austin. John has focused on dragonflies and damselflies throughout much of his career and has two books on these beautiful subjects that contain much of their photography. Among the many projects John and Kendra are currently working on, they are revising the Peterson Field Guide to Insects of North America. They have had the opportunity to travel extensively throughout Latin America, Africa and other parts of the world where they enjoy taking photos of pretty much anything in the natural world. They feel lucky enough to be able to teach and excite students about the amazing biodiversity they have been able to observe through their travels and photography together.

Their talk, Flight of the Bumblebee: The Art of High-speed Flash Photography, will be a peek into the natural world using high-speed flash to capture behaviors and actions that pass to quickly for the human eye to see. We'll talk about the techniques used for this type of photography as well as some of the scientific questions we are using the technique to answer.

Update: March Meeting

There's been a late change to our March program! Our new program is a field trip - "Night Photography: Hands-on" with Andy Heatwole.

Don't worry, though! Carol Serur will present her "Howto - A Smilebox Slideshow" later this year.

The opportunity to hold a night photography field trip was too good to pass up. With the change this weekend to Daylight Savings Time and the days getting longer, we needed to have this program in March. If the weather is bad that day, Andy will present a program on Night Photography at our regular location. Keep your fingers crossed.

You don't want to miss the March meeting! We are fortunate to have Andy Heatwole who will meet us in downtown San Marcos for a hands-on Night Photography workshop. Bring your camera and tripod, and be ready to learn tips from a pro on how to get great night shots. We will move around a few areas in San Marcos to get various kinds of evening images.

 

We will meet on the Courthouse lawn, on the side facing LBJ, at 7:00 pm, and will continue to 9:00 pm. You can park anywhere around the courthouse. Just look for the crowd of folks with cameras and tripods!

Andy is willing to stay another hour for those who would like to continue shooting, possibly moving to the river to get smooth water shots. Andy normally does a 4-hour workshop, charging $40 per person, so this is a great opportunity to learn settings and tips from Andy.

 

Andy Heatwole is a professional architectural photographer and works with clients throughout the US. He was inspired to take up photography over a decade ago when he discovered the possibilities of night photography on the Internet. What started as a hobby became a passionate pursuit and eventually a career. When he's not shooting commercially, he enjoys photographing the landscapes and natural beauty of the Central TX area. His night photography workshops blend his love for night photography with his enjoyment of teaching it. These workshops serve as an introduction into an area of photography that offers virtually unlimited opportunities for creativity. By demystifying the process, participants gain an understanding of the photographic techniques required for capturing great photos at night. His goal is for each participant to come away some great photos and the skills to continue exploring night photography on their own. All skill levels are welcomed and participants receive personal instruction to meet their specific needs.

About our Program

Are you the family or club photographer for special events? Do you like to document your vacations? How do you share the images with others after taking all of these photos?

Carol Serur will demonstrate a quick and EASY method to share your photos in a way people will want to see them again and again, and even share them with others who they just know would want to see them.

How easy? Come to the March 21st meeting and see how simple it is to prepare a fun and interesting slideshow of  your recent special moments.

Carol  has been a member of Hill Country Photography Club for about 6 years, after searching for a club that might help her learn more about photography. She has found the photo club programs, and the sharing of information among the members,  to have been  invaluable in helping her learn photography in the retirement stage of her life. She also served as club co-Vice President for 2011-2012.

Carol has shown her work at Watson Studio Gallery,  A. Smith Gallery, PhotoPlace Gallery, Dark Room Gallery, Blue Lab Gallery,  the Bob Bullock Museum, and Starbucks,  and currently serves as a board member of Texas Photographic Society.

About our Program

Our own Rose Epps will present the program this month! She will share a short slide show of her flower images, and will cover her equipment (including flash), camera settings, tips for shooting outdoors, tips for shooting indoors, post-processing possibilities and examples of before & after. If there's time and interest, she can also show a few processed images and go through them, layer by layer, to quickly show the changes made.

Rose will also have many of the small equipment items that she'll talk about - i.e. right angle finder, extension tubes, ring flash, etc.  She'll also have a couple of small floral canvases and a few of the notecards that she sells.

Her interest in photography began in the early 1990s when she purchased an SLR to replace her broken P&S. She learned she could control the outcome! As she approached retirement from the telecom industry, she took an excellent darkroom class at the local vo-tech school in Oklahoma City. Realizing she could have even more control, she purchased all the darkroom equipment necessary and "played" with various chemicals until late 2005. After purchasing the first Canon 5D (full frame) camera, she never returned to the darkroom. Since that time she's been continually learning to shoot better, through photo workshops (such as RMSP) and better post-processing NAPP workshops. Although she shoots a variety of subjects, esp. landscapes, her favorite subject is flowers.

She belongs to several photo groups in the Austin area and participates in group exhibits. She's also a volunteer Heart Gallery photographer. Last year she won 2nd Place in the Battlefields category with the Civil War Preservation Trust and her image is August in their 2013 calendar. She's also had several images in the HCA calendar over the years.
